Safeguarding:We are presently reviewing all our policies and practises in the light of Child Protection/Safeguarding.  We always seek to ensure the safety of our children both in school and at home, particully of late when e-safety is becoming such a concerning issue for parents and carers.

I recommend that all families log on to our E-Safety page and go through some of the programmes with their children.

Remember: -      ZIP IT!     BLOCK IT!    FLAG IT!

Staffing: Mrs Adamson will be re-joining the teaching assistant staff at the start of February, particularly supporting children with special educational needs.  Mrs Adamson used to work with Y1 children in class 1AM so is very familiar with our school and the younger children.

Bronze Eco Award:  All the children's efforts have been recognised and rewarded by the gaining of the Bronze Standard for Eco-awareness and action.  It is a great achievementment and everyone is very proud of this success.   The Learning Mentors, staff and the School Council have worked so hard in raising the issues of eco-awareness throughout the school.  Various groups of children have been responsible for re-cycling paper, saving energy, keeping the site clear of litter and growing vegetables.  A lot of hard work, time and fun has gone into this project, so we are delighted to have gained the award.  Well done to everyone.

School closures: If the school ever has to close at short notice then national curriculum work can be found via the school website e.g. class maths and spelling, fun numeracy and literacy games.  There are also links to the BBC schools programmes which in turn link to the national curriculum. Y6 & Y5 children have individual passwords that link them into the 'My Learning' VLE site on the website ~ this site contains SATs practise work and focused Year work in all subjects.

Home/School communication:  We now have in place a parents/carers text message service which will alert all adults about events, information, etc in a more efficient and effective manner.  Obviously if families wish to take part in this service it will be vitally important that the office have up to date landline and mobile numbers.  Please keep us informed, so we can keep you informed!!!

We have a new parent governor:  Mrs D Morrisroe has been elected and is taking up her role of governor in January.  We all look forward to welcoming her to her new post and hope she has a positive impact on the future of St Joseph's School.  Governors are the unsung heros of schools, they work long hours in the evening without much acknowledgement for ther committment and hard work.  Our governing body is an asset to the school and is very supportive of our children. Thank you to everyone for their valuable contributions.

Teaching Assistant Post:  The governors have appointed Mrs Goodchild to the post of teaching assistant and she will be supporting pupils with special educational needs under the direction of Mrs Watson (SENCO).

Reading Partners Reading is the key to unlocking life long learning.  The sooner a child becomes a confident reader - the sooner rapid educational progress can be made in all curriculum areas.  Initially we want all adults to read with their children, grandchildren, nephews and nieces ~ it can be a family event!  However, we do have some children in school who would greatly benefit from the support of a reading partner in school.  Can you help? Can you give the odd half-hour to hear a young child read?

Please contact Mrs Jennings in Y2 or Mrs Watson (Senco) to find out more about becoming a reading partner.

Keighley Families ‘Learning together’ Project:  The Keighley Arts Factory, in partnership with Keighley Furniture, has an exciting plan for local Keighley families to experience film making, photography, woodwork and cookery, and they want YOU to get involved.  Over the next 3 years they will be providing exciting short courses for local families.  All family members will be working together, having fun and learning new skills.  All local schools have been invited to keep parents/cares informed of the projects.  Some of the events will take place at North Street and Oakworth Rd.  If you are interested please contact:

Police Alert:  Please be aware that the local police have been handing out fixed penalty fines of £30 to members of the school community who are illegally parked around the local area.

Sports: This year we will be offering a range of taster sessions in different sporting activities.  The idea is to encourage children to try things, then hopefully they will feel confident enough to join clubs in the Keighley area. The programme has already started in KS2.

School Report Card:  As many of you are aware the government is moving away from SATs assessments and league tables for primary schools; the system will be replaced by a School Report Card (SRC) and this initiative is being piloted over a 2yr period. St Joseph's has been invited to join the pilot in order to trail the material and processes.
